At first glance, a Python script and a Shakespearean sonnet seem like polar opposites. However, my work in the digital humanities has shown me that data visualization can unlock new layers of meaning in centuries-old texts. By using natural language processing to map character networks, I discovered patterns that traditional reading often overlooks.
Quantifying the Qualitative
Analyzing the frequency of specific metaphors through code allowed me to track the evolution of the author's voice across their entire bibliography. This interdisciplinary approach doesn't replace the emotional resonance of literature; it adds a layer of objective clarity to our subjective interpretations. It is the perfect marriage of my love for logic and my appreciation for art.
Expanding the Toolkit
Learning to code has fundamentally changed how I approach problem-solving in the humanities. I no longer see academic disciplines as silos, but as interconnected fields that can inform and strengthen one another. Moving forward, I hope to continue bridging the gap between technology and the liberal arts to explore complex human stories.
