Every Saturday morning, I meet with a group of middle school students at our downtown library for math tutoring. While we focus on algebra and geometry, the conversations often drift toward their aspirations and the obstacles they face. This experience has opened my eyes to the deep disparities in educational resources within our own zip code.
More Than Just Formulas
Effective teaching is about more than just explaining a formula; it is about building the confidence of a student who has been told they aren't 'a math person.' Seeing a student’s face light up when they finally grasp a difficult concept is the highlight of my week. It reinforces the idea that potential is universal, but opportunity is not.
Commitment to Access
This work has motivated me to look beyond the classroom and consider how we can improve access to high-quality education for all. I am committed to continuing this advocacy, whether through direct service or systemic policy work. Education is the most powerful tool for social mobility, and it must be accessible to everyone.
